Pardon the gruesome imagery below but it’s relevant, we promise.
Over a decade ago the US Dept of Defense asked us to work on a problem that was effecting their medical evacuation processes. At the time, when a warfighter (soldier) was injured the medic would record the injuries and treatment on a form called a Tactical Combat Casualty Care Card (TCCC Card or DD Form 1380) also known as a TC3 card (the front image is shown to the left).

This card was then attached to the warfighter for reference when they are evacuation from the POI (point of injury) to triage. This provides a continuum of care and avoids potential mistakes.
This card was then attached to the warfighter for reference when they are evacuation from the POI (point of injury) to triage. This provides a continuum of care and avoids potential mistakes. Here’ the problem. That “card” would often get lost in transit and did not support the ability to add new information as time went along. It also didn’t support animals or varied treatment for different branches of the DOD.
Our solution, temporary tattoo’s encoded with medical information. An example of one is shown above. These tattoos can be applied anywhere along the continuum of care, multiples can be applied, and the data is securely encrypted. Pretty interesting, no?
Well, that sparked a natural curiosity within us to understand the backstory behind the tattoos we came across in our every day life. We have spoken with so many people over the years that we have decided to start this website to capture the most interesting tattoos we see and their origin story. It is simply a labor of love for us. Many of the origins are heartfelt and uplifting. We hope you will enjoy them as well.
If you have a tattoo with an interesting origin story, we encourage you to reach out to us via our contact page. We would love to interview you and post your fantastic tattoo here on Tattoo Origin.
Be well and have the day you deserve!
